Treating Menopause Naturally with Herbs and Natural Supplements

Herbs and Menopause

A Natural Approach to Treating Menopausal Symptoms

Many women are interested in treating menopause naturally, using herbs and other natural supplements.

“Natural” medicine has been around for centuries, and there are a variety of herbs and folk remedies that women have used since the dawn of time to treat the symptoms of menopause.

It is important that you check with your healthcare provider before trying any of the herbs listed below. Some herbs can interact with medications or cause side effects/symptoms of their own.

Herbs for The Menopause
The following herbs are most commonly used to treat the symptoms of menopause:

  • Black Cohosh- this is an herb noted for its estrogenic properties.  It helps the uterus contract and can relieve cramping and congestion in the uterus.  It is also used to relieve hot flashes. Black cohosh may also help relieve muscular pain and reduce blood cholesterol levels.

  • Remifemin Menopause Herbal Supplement, Tablets

  • Vitex- this herb is used as a hormonal tonic and balancer. It may also help relieve anxiety and depression during menopause.

  • Nature's Way Femaprin, Vitex Extract, Capsules

  • Dandelion-this is a great herb for cleansing and tonifying the liver. In some women the liver becomes over stressed and doesn't function properly. This often results in hormonal imbalances.

  • GNC Nature's Fingerprint Dandelion Root

  • Damiana- this herb is noted for its aphrodisiac qualities, and may help women who are experiencing libido or other sexual problems. It helps regulate the pituitary gland.

  • Nature's Way Damiana Leaves, Capsules

  • Dong quai- this herb is high in plant estrogens and can relieve many of the symptoms associated with menopause including hot flashes.

  • Yogi Tea Woman's Dong Quai Tonic

  • False Unicorn root- this herb helps regulate estrogen and can be used to tone the uterus and help the ovaries function properly. It has been used among other things to treat ovarian cysts in women.

  •
  • Shepherd's Purse- this herb helps regulate the pituitary gland.  It has androgenic properties, and particularly is useful for regulating progesterone levels in the body. It can help alleviate irregular bleeding and spotting, and help regulate cycles until they cease.

  •
  • Wild Yam- wild yam has been touted for centuries as an anti-inflammatory. It can provide relief for symptoms of arthritis due to menopause, and may also help minimize heavy menstrual bleeding. It is estrogenic in nature.

Natural Living During The Menopause
Of course there are many other 'natural' approaches to menopause, the most important of which is diet and exercise.

All women should eat a well balanced diet and engage in regular exercise at least three to five times per week before, during and after menopause.

A well balanced diet will help fuel, the body with many essential nutrients vital for promoting bone density and well being. Exercise also helps strengthen bone mass and may relieve many of the symptoms of menopause including irritability, mood swings and hot flashes.

If you are not already taking a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement, you should begin doing so immediately. While it is important to eat well, our bodies are not always able to absorb all the nutrients we get from the foods we eat. Taking a supplement will ensure that you are indeed getting all the vitamins and minerals you believe you are each and every day.

Look for a supplement that is specifically geared toward women approaching their menopausal years to ensure that you get adequate levels of essential nutrients such as calcium and magnesium.

Lastly, remember that approaching menopause naturally means giving consideration to the mind, body and spirit as a whole unit. Take time to nourish your soul and your emotions as well as your physical body during menopause, and you will ultimately reap the benefits that natural living has to offer.
